Origin and history

The road cross of Hattenville is a medieval monument located in the Seine-Maritime department in Normandy. Dated from the 14th century, it is distinguished by its white stone bill and sculptures representing a crucifix surrounded by angels, as well as donors. The Virgin, Saint John and a Virgin with Child are also among the motifs, reflecting the religious art of the time.

The cross suffered major damage during the French Revolution, losing its barrel. After this period, it was preserved by an individual before being classified as a historical monument on 16 September 1907. Today, it is located at the intersection of the road of the Cross of Peter and the road D228, on a site called The Stone Cross, and belongs to the commune.

Iconographically, the lower part of the monument could represent a saint or bishop, although this identification remains uncertain. The cross thus illustrates both late Gothic art and local devotional practices, while at the same time testifying to the historical upheavals that it went through, including its partial destruction and subsequent restoration.

Administratively, the cross is listed under Insee 76342 for the municipality of Hattenville. Its classification among the historical monuments of the Seine-Maritime and the arrondissement of Le Havre makes it a notable heritage element of the region, accessible to the public although its exact location is sometimes subject to cartographic approximations.
