Stone road cross of the 16th century: classification by decree of 18 August 1913

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin de Malaincourt is a historic monument located in the commune of Malaincourt, Vosges department (88). Dating from the 16th century, this stone cross is a typical example of the road crosses erected at that time, often to mark gathering places, crossroads or prayer points. It shows the importance of religion in the daily life of the rural populations of Lorraine.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 18 August 1913, this cross is now owned by the commune of Malaincourt. The cross-roads, like this one, often served as landmarks for travellers or pilgrims, while playing a spiritual and social role in local communities. Their presence reflects the religious and cultural organization of the region in the sixteenth century, a period marked by social and religious transformations in Europe.
