Cross road located on the public square (Box B 879): inscription by order of 16 May 1972
Origin and history
The Tudeils Road Cross is a historical monument located in the village of Tudeils, in Corrèze, New Aquitaine region. Dated from the 16th century, it is distinguished by its sculptures made in a stone more tender than that of the barrel, representing a crucifixion with Christ, the two larrons, and a Virgin of Mercy. The cross has been listed as a historical monument since May 16, 1972.
The cross is on a public square, close to the church and the town hall. Originally, she could have been part of an Oradour, a shelter that has now disappeared. The pedestal, topped by a thick slab with ground edges, supports a cubic base and an octagonal barrel. The sculptures, in high relief, show Christ on the cross surrounded by angels, the two larrons, and a Virgin of Mercy on the south face.
The materials used reflect a common technique of the time: soft stone blocks were placed on a sandstone or granite barrel to facilitate the sculpture of complex scenes. This method also explains the wear of the upper parts, exposed after the removal of the original shelter. The cross is now owned by the commune and classified under the reference PA00099935 in the base Mérimée.
