Cross of road called du Mont located in the hamlet of La Charrière : inscription by order of 18 February 1926

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin dit du Mont is a historical monument located in the commune of Saint-Germain-Nuelles, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the second quarter of the 17th century, it is located precisely in the hamlet of La Charrière, as indicated by the archives of the Mérimée base. This type of cross, typical of rural roads, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local residents.

The cross was officially listed as a historical monument by an order of 18 February 1926. Today it belongs to the commune of Saint-Germain-Nuelles, although its exact location is sometimes subject to approximations, as suggested by the accuracy of the location noted "a priori satisfactory" (level 7/10). Available data are mainly from the Monumentum database and internal archives.

At the time of its construction, in the seventeenth century, the cross-roads played an important role in the daily life of rural communities. They often marked gathering places, crossroads or prayer points, reflecting the strong influence of the Catholic religion in the region. These monuments were also protective symbols for travellers and peasants working in the vicinity.
