Origin and history
The road cross of Saint-Esteben, located on the edge of the Route départementale n°14, is a historical monument dating back to the last quarter of the seventeenth century. It is distinguished by its barrel bearing a long inscription in Basque, accompanied by the date 1683. This linguistic detail reflects the Basque cultural anchor of the region at that time, where Basque was still widely used in public and religious inscriptions.
The reverse of the cross was re-used during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, specifically in 1894, to serve as a mission cross. This re-use reflects the religious practices of the time, where popular missions, often organized by orders such as the Jesuits or the Capuchins, marked local communities by the erection or transformation of the cross. The inscription of 1894 attests to this second life of the monument, illustrating its continuing role in the spiritual and collective life of the village.
Placed on a sandstone base, the cross was officially recognized as a historic monument by an inscription order dated 29 April 1999. This status protects its integrity and emphasizes its heritage importance, both for its seniority and for the tangible traces it bears of local religious and linguistic practices. The approximate location, noted as "a priori satisfactory", would situate the monument near the church of Saint-Esteben, strengthening its link with the parish and historical fabric of the village.
