Sculpture of stone: classification by decree of 28 June 1912

Origin and history

The Cemetery Cross of Curemonte is a listed historical monument erected in the 16th century. It is distinguished by its carved stone rod (or barrel), an element protected by ministerial decree of 28 June 1912. Located on the adjoining square of the village church, it embodies the local religious and funeral heritage of this period.

This type of cross, typical of medieval and reborn cemeteries, served both as a sacred landmark and as a gathering place for ceremonies. In the 16th century Limousin, rural communities organized their social and spiritual life around the church and its cemetery, where these crosses marked the sacred space. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Christian faith in daily life, between agricultural work and religious celebrations.

The precise location of the cross, indicated as 'a priori satisfactory' (note 6/10), places the monument in the heart of the historic village of Curemonte, in the department of Corrèze. Owned by the commune, it still bears witness to the local lapidary craftsmanship and commemorative practices of the Ancien Régime. No information is available on any sponsors or artisans who have worked towards its realization.
