Origin and history
The Mauriac Cemetery Cross was a historic monument originally located near the eastern wall of the cemetery of this Cantalian city. Its exact location, now known as Place Georges-Pompidou, reflects its anchoring in the town's urban and memorial landscape. Although its construction period is not specified, its status as a listed monument underscores its local heritage importance.
Around 1953, this cross was moved, marking a first change in its original environment. However, its existence ended in 1981, when the architect of the Bâtiments de France found that it had disappeared. This monument, owned by the commune of Mauriac, illustrates the challenges of preserving historical funeral elements, often vulnerable to urban transformation or neglect.
The cemetery crosses, such as Mauriac's, traditionally played a central role in the rural communities and small towns of Auvergne. They served as spiritual and social landmarks, marking the entrance to the burial grounds and reminding the living of the presence of the deceased. Their disappearance, as here, erases a tangible part of the collective memory, while leaving administrative and historical traces in the archives.
The location of this monument, noted with an accuracy deemed "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), was associated with the Insee 15120 code, confirming its connection to the Department of Cantal and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its address, intersected by GPS coordinates, Place Georges-Pompidou, still allows to evoke its original location, although the monument itself has disappeared.
