Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Blésignac is to the right of the west entrance of the church of Saint-Roch, in the municipality of Blésignac, Gironde. Dating from the 16th century, it rests on a modern base composed of three steps supporting a cubic base. A barrel adorned with unidentifiable pilasters and human heads rises up to a sommitial cross bearing the arms of the Biron family, who sponsored the building.
The cemetery crosses appeared from the 15th century, often erected by master masons rather than sculptors. They symbolize local devotion and highlight the patron saint of the parish, here absent from the decor. The cross of Blésignac, classified as a historical monument since December 20, 1907, reflects this religious and social tradition.
Its architecture combines late Gothic elements (clochetons, pilasters) and sober decoration, typical of seigneurial gifts. The sculpted heads, now indecipherable, recall the artistic practices of the time, where the anonymity of the artisans contrasted with the reputation of donors, such as the Biron family.
