Origin and history
La Croix de Cemetery de Bruvelieures is a monumental cross located in the cemetery of the village of Bruvelieures, in the Vosges department, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 18th century, it is representative of the Louis XV style and was made of wrought iron. This type of cross, often erected in cemeteries or at intersections, served as both a religious symbol and a landmark for processions or community gatherings.
The cross was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 13 May 1937, thus recognizing its heritage and artistic value. It belongs to the municipality of Brouvelieures and is distinguished by its wrought iron work, typical of the local crafts of the period. The cemetery crosses played a central role in village life, marking the sacred space and recalling the presence of faith in the daily lives of the inhabitants.
The department of Vosges, where Brouvelieures is located, was at this time a rural region marked by an agricultural and artisanal economy. Religious monuments, such as this cross, often reflected the piety of local communities and their attachment to traditions. Their preservation today makes it possible to understand the importance of religious heritage in the history of French rural territories.
