Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Collioure is a stone religious monument erected in the 16th century. It is distinguished by its octagonal base placed on a cylindrical drum at the base and octagonal in the upper part. The cross, 80 cm high, is decorated with flowers and has two carved faces: one representing Christ surrounded by angels, the other the Virgin and a tetramorph. This type of cross, typical of medieval and reborn cemeteries, served both as a religious symbol and a landmark for funeral processes.

Classified as historical monuments by decree of 30 November 1912, this cross illustrates the funeral art of the Renaissance in Languedoc-Roussillon. His iconography, mixing divine figures and Christic symbols, reflects the religious beliefs and practices of the time. The cross is now owned by the municipality of Collioure and remains a material testimony of local history, accessible to the public in its original location.

According to official sources, such as the Mérimée base of the Ministry of Culture, the cross is located precisely at 1 Rue du Jardin Navarro, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Its conservation status and exact location have been documented, with an accuracy deemed "a priori satisfactory". The cross, though modest in size, embodies the artistic and spiritual heritage of the Occitanie region, marked by a strong tradition of monumental sculpture in modern times.
