Stone cross of the 16S of Fohet cemetery: classification by decree of 12 December 1910

Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Fohet, classified as Historic Monument by decree of 12 December 1910, is a remarkable example of 16th century religious sculpture. Its upper branches end with foliage florets, while Christ, depicted on one side, is surrounded by a polylobed nimbe with four redents. This nimb occupies the angles formed by the arms of the cross, adding a symbolic and artistic dimension to the ensemble. The cylindrical barrel, separated from the head by a bracelet decorated with figures, highlights the know-how of the artisans of the time.

Located in the cemetery of Fohet in Aydat (Puy-de-Dôme), this stone cross illustrates the importance of funeral monuments in the villages of Auvergne in the Renaissance. These crosses served not only as religious markers, but also as gathering points for community ceremonies and prayers. Their presence in cemeteries reflected the piety of the inhabitants and their attachment to Christian traditions, in an area marked by a strong rural and religious identity.

The location of the cross, although documented (approximate address: 5609 Fohet, 63970 Aydat), is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10 depending on the sources). Owned by the municipality, it remains accessible to the public, although information on the modalities of visits (opening, hours) is not specified. Its classification in 1910 reflects its heritage value, preserved despite centuries.
