Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Lanvaudan, dated 1647, is a monumental granite calvary located in the church square, in the heart of the village of Lanvaudan (Morbihan). It marks the location of the former parish cemetery, directly linked to Saint Maudez church. Its architecture rests on an evasive base supporting three bases: the central carries Christ on the cross surrounded by royal crowns, while the sides house the statues of the Virgin and Saint John. This ordeal, contemporary of the church, illustrates Breton religious art of the seventeenth century.

The monument was listed as historic monuments on March 20, 1934 for its heritage value. Its base in the shape of a curved altar is decorated with angel heads at the corners, surmounted by a tabernacle and two steps. Christ, carved west side, is surrounded by a glory, while a Virgin with the Child adorns the east side. The cross, made of nude stone, is distinguished by its arms finished with crowns, symbol of divine royalty. Its current location, south of the church in the parish enclosure, reflects its central role in local religious life.
