Origin and history

The Larré Cemetery Cross, also called the Twelve Apostles' Cross, stands on the square of the Larré church in Morbihan (British). Built in the 14th century, it originally occupied the site of the old cemetery, southeast of the religious building. His inscription in the title of historic monuments, which took place on 5 October 1926, bears witness to his heritage value and his artistic interest in the region.

The cross presents a remarkable carved base, adorned with four characters, including the bishop Saint Aignan. These representations, typical of medieval religious art, are accompanied by various scenes on each side: angelic greeting to the north, Saint Laurent and Saint Catherine among other holy figures. The octagonal cask supports a cross Christ surmounted by the acronym INRI, the central symbol of the Christian faith.

Rebuilt in 1866, the cross preserves original architectural elements while integrating 19th century additions. The sculptures of the foot, like Saint Michael, Saint Adrien or Saint John the Baptist holding the Lamb, illustrate the iconographic richness of the monument. These details, combined with its centuries-old history, make it a major witness to the religious heritage of Breton.

Owned by the municipality of Larré, the cross is located precisely at Place Guillaume Pichon, near the parish church. Its conservation status and location (GPS coordinates available) allow an accessible visit, although its degree of geographical accuracy is assessed as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10) by official sources.
