The cross of the old cemetery (cad. AB 27): inscription by decree of 9 December 1939
Origin and history
The Cemetery Cross of Locmariaquer is a historical monument located in the town of Locmariaquer, in the department of Morbihan, Brittany. Dating from the 17th century, it is distinguished by its original structure: a table supported by three trapues, resting on an octagonal base decorated with figures. Originally placed in the old cemetery, it was moved to the new cemetery. Its base is attributed to the seventeenth century, while its upper part seems to be earlier, suggesting some re-use or partial reconstruction.
Registered as a historical monument since December 9, 1939, this cross illustrates the Breton Christian architecture of the modern era. Its stone barrel, topped by a clovered cross, and its slope-faced base reflect local craft techniques. Although its exact location is approximate (5294 Route d'Auray), it remains a symbol of the religious heritage of Locmariaquer, managed by the municipality. The available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, underline its importance in the landscape of small Breton calvaries.
The monument is part of a historical context where cemetery crosses played a central role in Breton community life. They marked burial sites, served as spiritual landmarks and reflected the expertise of local stone tailors. In the 17th century, Brittany, a deeply Catholic region, saw these buildings multiply, often financed by parishes or local donors. The Cross of Locmariaquer, with its carved elements, bears witness to this artistic and religious tradition, while asking questions about its exact, partially obscure origins.
