Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Néant-sur-Yvel is a stone monument carved from the 16th century. It is located at the northwest end of the church of Néant-sur-Yvel, in the department of Morbihan, Brittany. This cross, of a medallion type under construction, presents on one of its faces a Christ in cross surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John. Its eight-paned monolithy kerb at the top four shields with arms of the Montauban family.

The cross was listed as historical monuments on 30 May 1927. It is classified under the reference Cross of the 16th century located near the bedside of the church in the cadastre (ZI 69). Owned by the municipality, it is located precisely at 7 Place de l'Eglise, 56430 Neant-sur-Yvel, according to the Merimée and Monumentum data.

Architecturally, this cross is representative of the Breton cemetery crosses of the Renaissance. His religious iconography and heraldic shields reflect the artistic influences and feudal ties of the time. The Montauban, the noble family mentioned, may have played a role in its construction or protection, although the source text does not specify their exact involvement.
