Origin and history
The Butot Cemetery Cross is a stone monument located in the cemetery of the village of Butot in Normandy. Dated from 1560 by an inscription, it has been classified as a historical monument since 8 December 1913. This monument, 5 meters high and in sandstone, is distinguished by its octagonal base and carved motifs, including human heads, a representation of the blessed bishop, instruments of the Passion of Christ and lily flowers.
The precise location of the cross is indicated as being in the Butot cemetery, at the approximate address of 7 Rue Saint-Wulfran. The monument is owned by the commune and forms part of the architectural heritage of the Seine-Maritime, as mentioned in bibliographical references such as Le Patrimoine des Communes de la Seine-Maritime.
The cross, classified by ministerial decree, illustrates the importance of religious and artistic symbols in Norman villages in the 16th century. Its rich iconography, mixing plant and religious elements, reflects the beliefs and crafts of the time. The instruments of the Passion and the lily flowers highlight its role both as a memorial and as a spiritual part of the local community.
