Origin and history
The cross of Galcetaburu, erected in the early eighteenth century, marks the culmination of an ancient medieval road inherited from a Roman road. This route linked the Bidouze and Nive valleys, highlighting its strategic and historical importance. The work adopts a form of Latin cross, with straight arms finished with half-balls and a Christ engraved on one of the faces. The head of Christ occupies the centre of the crusillon, while his arms, with stylized hands, rise upwards. A date, 1714, is engraved on both sides of his feet, accompanied by two faces simplified in ecoinçon.
On the reverse, an inscription takes up the first verses of Vexilla Regis, a medieval liturgical hymn. The barrel of the cross connects to the upper part by a capital, adding a remarkable architectural dimension. Ranked a Historical Monument in 1972, this cross illustrates both local religious art and ancient road heritage, testifying to exchanges between the Pyrenean valleys.
The location of the cross, near the N.N. 133 and the village of Gamarthe, confirms its role as a visual and symbolic landmark. Its classification in 1972 underlines its heritage value, while its communal property guarantees its preservation. The sculptural details, like the hands of Christ with equal fingers or the faces in ecoinçon, reflect a neat craft, characteristic of the Basque cross of the way of this time.
