Cross of the old cemetery, backed by the bedside of the church: inscription by decree of 7 November 1938

Origin and history

The cross of the ancient cemetery of Champecret is a monumental granite cross, dated from the 16th century. It is distinguished by its hexagonal stem and its Christ carved at the top. Originally located in the old cemetery of Champsecret, it is now backed by the bedside of Notre-Dame church. The hamme has bumps designed to hold an iron circle, where branches of boxwood were placed at religious festivals.

Listed as historical monuments since November 7, 1938, this cross is a typical example of the funeral Christian architecture of the Renaissance in Lower Normandy. It reflects local religious practices, including the use of the blessed box during liturgical celebrations. The cross is now owned by the commune of Champsecret, in the department of Orne.

The monument illustrates the central role of cemeteries and crosses in medieval and modern community life. These structures served not only as funeral markers, but also as gathering places for collective rituals, such as processions or blessings. Their presence near the churches emphasized the link between death, faith and divine protection, in a region where the Catholic Church largely structured social life.

The cross of Champecret, with its architectural characteristics (hexagonal section, Christ in relief), is part of a regional tradition of granite sculpture, an abundant material in the Armenian Massif. Its state of conservation and its inscription among historical monuments make it a remarkable local heritage, testifying both to the period crafts and to the religious beliefs of 16th century Normandy.
