Mission Cross (H 625): Order of 26 May 1992

Origin and history

The mission cross of Fresse is a religious monument located in the commune of Fresse, Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Dating from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, more precisely from 1751, it embodies an architectural and spiritual heritage typical of this period. It was erected in a context where mission crosses played a central role in the religious life of rural communities, often associated with events of preaching or spiritual renewal.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 26 May 1992, this cross is now protected for its heritage value. It is located at approximately 122 Le Conot in the municipality of Fresse and belongs to the municipality. Mission crosses, such as this one, were usually installed at strategic locations, often bordering roads or public squares, to mark a place of assembly or devotion.

The Haute-Saône region, in modern times, was marked by a rural economy and a society organized around the parish and local lords. Religious monuments, such as the crosses, served not only as spiritual landmarks, but also as symbols of collective identity for the inhabitants. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the religious and social practices of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in this part of the Franche-Comté.
