Origin and history

The stone cross of Petit-Noir, erected in 1617, is an emblematic monument of the first quarter of the seventeenth century. Located in the Jura department, it bears witness to local handicrafts and religious practices of that time. Its inscription as Historic Monument by decree of 13 March 1950 underlines its heritage importance and its preservation by the municipality.

At that time, Franche-Comté, then under Spanish influence, was marked by a rural life and strong religious traditions. Stone crosses often served as spiritual or memorial landmarks, reflecting the piety of village communities. Their presence in public squares, such as that of November 11, 1918 in Petit-Noir, strengthened their social and symbolic role.

Today, this cross remains a central element of the local heritage. Its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 7/10), and its communal property ensure its sustainability. Available data from sources such as Monumentum and the Merimée database confirm its historical and geographical anchoring in the region.
