Origin and history
The cross of Pierre de Bouville is a stone calvary erected in the 15th century, located in the commune of Bouville, Normandy. This monument, classified as historical monuments since 16 August 1976, is distinguished by its sculpted representations of the four saints: Saint Peter, Saint James, Saint Catherine and Saint John the Baptist. Its precise location is mentioned in the Mérimée notices as being at the intersection of C.D. 88 and C.D. 104, as well as at 57 Route de Belintot.
The cross, owned by the commune of Bouville, illustrates Norman medieval religious art. Its classification in 1976 underlines its heritage value, both for its seniority and for its artistic characteristics. The sources available, including the Merimée base and works such as Le Patrimoine des Communes de la Seine-Maritime, confirm its local importance and its integration into the region's historical landscape.
The monument is part of a broader context of medieval Christian devotion, where calvaries served as spiritual and community landmarks. In Normandy, these crosses often marked gathering places, crossroads or pilgrimage paths. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Church in everyday life, as well as the know-how of local stone tailors, whose works mixed religious function and artistic expression.
