Stone Cross of Cemetery (Box C 111): Registration by Order of 23 March 1989
Origin and history
The stone cross of the cemetery of Saint-Denis-des-Murs is a monumental cross of flower type, recognisable by its petals of lily flowers that join together to form a circle. This type of cross, typical of medieval art, is distinguished by its two carved faces: one representing Christ on the cross, the other the Virgin Mary. The details of the sculptures are described as a summary invoice, suggesting a local craftsmanship rather than a high-precision work.
Classified as a Historical Monument, this cross was protected by a registration order on 23 March 1989. It is located in the cemetery of the commune, on the territory of Saint-Denis-des-Murs, in Haute-Vienne, and belongs to the municipality. Its exact location, although documented in the Merimée base, is considered to have poor accuracy (note 5/10), which can make its identification on the ground less immediate.
The cemetery crosses, like this one, played a central role in the religious and community life of the villages in the Middle Ages. They served as a spiritual landmark, a gathering place for processions or prayers, and often marked the entrance or centre of sacred spaces. Their presence reflected the importance of the Christian faith in the social and territorial organization of the countryside, where the Church structured much of daily life.
