Origin and history
The Stone Cross of Caylus is a historical monument located on the road linking Caylus to Lassalle, in the department of Tarn-et-Garonne. It rests on a massive pedestal, consisting of a single block in the shape of a parallelepiped, topped by a flat stone. The cross itself, now disappeared, presented a Christ carved in relief, a very primitive execution. This type of monument, typical of rural areas, often served as a religious landmark or symbol for travellers and local residents.
The pedestal still remains, but the cross was stolen in 1997, as attested by a report from the CADA in 2025. Classified as a historical monument by decree of 23 June 1950, this cross belonged to the commune of Caylus. Crosses of this kind, frequent in Occitania, often marked crossroads, parish boundaries or places of devotion, reflecting the importance of religion in the daily life of rural communities.
The location of this monument, although documented (GPS coordinates and approximate address: 6266 Poussou West), remains imprecise according to modern criteria, with a note of 6/10 for its reliability. This geographical uncertainty is partly explained by its seniority and the transformations of the landscape over the centuries. Today, there is only the base, silent witness to its history and past function.
