Origin and history

La Croix de Plumieux, also known as Croix de Saint-Leau, is a historical monument located in the commune of Plumieux, Brittany. It is located precisely in the local cemetery, at the bottom of it. This cross, dated from the 15th century, is a typical example of Breton religious art of this period, marked by detailed sculptures and characteristic geometric shapes.

The base of the cross is decorated with isolated characters, arranged in a triangular shape around an octagonal barrel. The main motif is a two-track bas-relief, presented on a trilobed form. These stylistic elements reflect the artistic influences of the period, mixing religious symbolism and local craftsmanship. The cross was classified as historical monuments by an order of 19 June 1964, thereby recognizing its heritage value.

The location of the cross in the cemetery of Plumieux underlines its role in the collective memory and funeral practices of the community. In medieval times, monumental crosses often served as spiritual landmarks and gathering places for the faithful. Their presence in cemeteries was also linked to the symbolic protection of the deceased and the sanctification of space. This cross, owned by the commune, remains an important witness to the religious heritage of Breton.
