Origin and history
La Croix de Roblin is a monumental cross located in the town of Ploërmel, Morbihan. Dating from the 16th century, it is carved in granite and presents relief decorations under a building. On one side, it represents a Calvary with Christ on the cross surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John, while the other side shows a Pietà. The quadrangular base is decorated with scenes such as the Tombing, the Cross Bearing, as well as unidentified figures of a chestnut and a knight.
The Roblin Cross was listed as historic monuments on May 30, 1927. It belongs to the commune of Ploërmel and is distinguished by its Christian architecture typical of the Breton region. The carved details, such as religious scenes and anonymous characters, reflect the funeral and devotional art of the time.
This type of monumental cross played an important role in the religious and social life of the 16th century Breton communities. They often served as spiritual landmarks, places of prayer or commemoration, and sometimes marked paths or crossroads. Their presence attests to the importance of the Christian faith in structuring local landscapes and practices at this time.
