Origin and history
The cross of Saint-Bily, located in Plaudren in Morbihan, is a carved granite banner cross dating from the 16th century. This monument, classified as Historical Monument by decree of 25 September 1929, is distinguished by its cubic structure decorated with religious sculptures. On one side is Christ on the cross, while the other represents a Pietà. Four statues representing the Virgin, Saint John, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimatia occupy the corners, supported by lamp asses. The drum, shelled and twisted in the upper part, rests on a base decorated with four angels under a broken stick pediment.
The location of the cross, opposite the chapel of Saint-Bily, suggests a strong link with this place of worship. Its architectural style and carved motifs reflect Breton Renaissance religious art, marked by rich iconography and mastered granite-sized techniques. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory (level 7/10), and its listing as Historic Monuments reflects its heritage value.
The protected elements specifically include the 16th century cross, identified under the cadastral reference ZK 21. Although the practical information on visits is not detailed in the available sources, its status as a Historic Monument makes it a point of cultural interest for the region of Vannes and Brittany. The photographs available, such as Fab5669's Creative Commons license, help document this local heritage.
