Cross of Saint-Samson (not cadastral; public domain): registration by order of 23 October 1964

Origin and history

La Croix de Saint-Samson is a historic monument located in Pleumeur-Bodou, in the Côtes-d'Armor department, Brittany. Dated from the 17th century, it is characterized by an imposing structure: a polygonal barrel supports a massive cross whose arms are joined by sculptures. On one side, Christ on the cross is represented in relief, while the Virgin occupies the opposite face. This type of cross, typical of Breton religious art, often served as a landmark or symbol of devotion for local communities.

The cross of Saint-Samson was inscribed as historical monuments by an order of 23 October 1964. This official protection underscores its heritage and artistic importance. The monument, owned by the municipality of Pleumeur-Bodou, is located precisely at 6 Hent Ar Groaz. Its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed in the sources, but its registration reflects its historical and cultural value to the region.

In the 17th century, Brittany was marked by a strong religious identity, with a multiplication of crosses and calvaries serving both as places of prayer and as territorial markers. These monuments often reflected the piety of rural communities, while playing a social and symbolic role. The Saint-Samson Cross is part of this tradition, although the sources do not specify the exact circumstances of its creation or its possible sponsors.
