Stone village cross, end of the 16th century: by order of 3 June 1908
Origin and history
The village cross of Fréville is a stone monument erected at the end of the 16th century. It is located in the commune of Fréville, in the department of Vosges (88), in the region of Grand Est. This type of cross, typical of the villages of the time, often served as a spiritual and social landmark for the inhabitants, marking the centre or entrances of the villages.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 3 June 1908, this cross is now owned by the municipality. The village crosses, frequent in the countryside of Lorraine, reflect the importance of the Catholic religion in the daily life of rural populations in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were often gathering places for processions or collective prayers.
The location of the cross at 1 Rue du Haut in Fréville is indicated with an accuracy considered fair (note of 5/10). Although little architectural detail is provided, its classification reflects its heritage value. Available data are mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, without reference to recent studies or restorations.
