Origin and history

La Croix des Buttes is a cross of crossroads located in Questembert, Morbihan, Brittany. According to local tradition, it was erected after the victory of Alain the Great, Duke of Brittany, over the Normans in 890. This granite monument, surrounded by two Celtic steles, bears the arms of the family of Carné, a historical line of the region.

Listed as historical monuments since 8 May 1933, the cross crosses several avenues, including Roland Garros Avenue and Jean Grimaud Street. Its simple but symbolic architecture reflects the importance of cross-roads in Breton heritage, often linked to events marking local history.

The presence of the Celtic steles and the Carnean shield underscores its anchor in the medieval history of Questembert. Although its precise dating remains uncertain, its association with Alain the Great and its heritage protection make it an emblematic monument of the Morbihan.
