Socle de croix : inscription by decree of 17 April 1931

Origin and history

La Croix des Changes is a monumental cross located in Provins, Seine-et-Marne department, Île-de-France. This monument, located in the Place du Châtel, served as a central place for monetary transactions at the famous Champagne fairs in the Middle Ages. It was also used for the proclamation of the edicts issued by the Count of Champagne, then by the King of France, illustrating his administrative and symbolic role in the city.

The Cross of Change was registered as historical monuments by order of 17 April 1931. This classification specifically concerns its base, which constitutes the protected element of the monument. Although the architectural details or subsequent transformations are not specified in the available sources, its location on Châtel Square, the historic heart of Provins, bears witness to its past importance in local economic and political life.

Provins, a medieval town renowned for its international fairs in the 12th and 13th centuries, attracted merchants and changers from all over Europe. The Cross of Change is part of this dynamic context, where commercial exchanges and judicial or administrative decisions were a rhythm of daily life. Today, this monument recalls the heritage of the Champagne fairs, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the key role of Provins in medieval trade.
