Origin and history
The 18th century cross of Saint-Caradec is a calvary located in the centre of the cemetery of this Breton village. This monument, erected on a two-degree walk, rests on a base crowned with a cornice with cellar and quarter round. Its monolithic base supports a shale cask adorned with the Holy Face, as well as two main scenes: on one side, the Crucifixion surrounded by angels holding a chalice, and on the other, a Virgin with the Child accompanied by two characters. The date of 1736, engraved under the Virgin, actually corresponds to a restoration, the calvary originally dating from the sixteenth century.
This calvary came from the old cemetery of Saint-Caradec, moved in 1867. Although the original cross was destroyed, the present monument, classified by decree of 17 February 1928, remains a sculptural testimony of Breton religious traditions. Owned by the commune, it is now located at the approximate address of the 3 Court of the Three Gates, in the department of Côtes-d的Armor.
The location of the monument is estimated as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), based on available data. Its listing as a Historic Monument underscores its heritage importance, although its condition and accessibility are not detailed in the sources. The Calvary embodies both an artistic heritage and a marker of local history, linked to the funeral and religious practices of Brittany from the 17th and 18th centuries.
