Cross of 18s: inscription by order of 1 February 1929
Origin and history
The 18th century cross of Anrosey is a monument located in the cemetery of this commune of Haute-Marne, in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 18th century, it was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 1 February 1929. This type of cross, often erected in cemeteries or at crossroads, served as a spiritual landmark and as a protection symbol for local populations.
In the 18th century, the villages of Champagne-Ardenne, like Anrosey, were mainly organized around agricultural and craft activities. Cemetery crosses played an important role in community life, marking sacred spaces and recalling the presence of Christian faith in everyday life. Their preservation today offers a material testimony of these religious and social practices of the Old Regime.
