Cross of the village embedded in the wall of the church (cad. AC 120): inscription by decree of 29 March 1935
Origin and history
The cross of the town of Bignan is a historical monument located in the commune of Bignan, Morbihan (Brittany). Dating from the 16th century, it is in the immediate vicinity of the southern transept of the local church. Its architecture is distinguished by an altar-shaped base, accessible by two steps, surmounted by a granite cross of patted shape. This type of cross, typical of Breton Christian architecture, often served as a religious landmark and gathering place for the faithful.
The cross was listed as historic monuments on March 29, 1935, recognizing its heritage value. According to the available descriptions, the altar supports a retable with a tomb bet, decorated with decorative mouldings. The cross is embedded in the wall of the church, suggesting a close integration with the nearby religious building. This monument illustrates the importance of Christian symbols in Breton public space during the Renaissance.
Owned by the commune of Bignan, the cross is today a material testimony of religious art and popular piety of the sixteenth century. Although its exact location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10) depending on the sources, it remains a point of interest for the study of the historical monuments of Morbihan. Its state of conservation and accessibility are not specified in the documents available, but its inscription in the heritage protects its architectural integrity.
