Origin and history

The Cross of the Couchey Cemetery, dated from the 16th century, is an emblematic monument located in the Côte-d'Or department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It was classified as historic monuments on May 28, 1883, recognizing its heritage value. This stone cross, surmounted by a pelican, carries a cross Christ and a Virgin to the Child, while its pedestal, adorned with Renaissance motifs, is surrounded by ionic columns.

The cross was erected in 1550 at the expense of Stephen Sayve, co-signor of Couchey. Demonstrated on December 20, 1793 by municipal decision, it was resettled in 1804 on a stone column and restored in 1886. The Swiss architects and Vassal, disciples of Viollet-le-Duc, then enriched the pedestal of Renaissance ornaments inspired by the chapel of Pagny Castle, owned by Philippe de Brion, lord of Couchey and Pagny. The solemn blessing took place in 1887 by Bishop Lecot of Dijon.

Today, the cross is owned by the municipality of Couchey and remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the region. Its iconography, combining religious symbols and Renaissance decorations, reflects the artistic and cultural influences of the time. The approximate location, 3 Rue Alfred de Musset, allows visitors to discover this classified heritage, although its geographical accuracy is considered mediocre (level 5/10).
