Cemetery Cross: Order of 16 March 1890

Origin and history

The Cemetery Cross of Louin is a hosannière cross, a type of Christian monument often associated with religious processions and community gatherings. Located in the cemetery of the commune of Louin, in the department of Deux-Sèvres, it has been classified as historical monuments since 16 March 1890. Its structure, composed of a square base surmounted by a column and a cross, reaches about three meters high. The Holy Crosses, typical of the Middle Ages, often served as a gathering point for religious ceremonies, especially during Easter holidays or Rogations.

The Loin Cross dates back to the 11th century, making it an architectural and religious testimony of the medieval period in the Poitou region. At that time, rural communities organized around the Church, and cemeteries, often located near churches or on the outskirts of villages, played a central role in social and spiritual life. The crosses erected in these sacred spaces symbolized divine protection and marked a place of prayer and collective memory. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Christian faith in the territorial and daily organization of the people.

Ranked among historical monuments by a decree of 16 March 1890, this cross illustrates the heritage interest brought to these buildings by the end of the 19th century. This ranking reflects its historical and artistic value, as well as the desire to preserve medieval remains in an area marked by a rich religious past. Today, the cross remains an emblematic element of the local heritage, managed by the commune of Louin and accessible in the enclosure of the cemetery, at the approximate address of 3 Rue de l'Hipogée.
