Origin and history
The cross of Requer, whose name comes from the Breton Requer (village in front of the village), is a cross of road located in Guérande, Loire-Atlantique. Cut in a block of granite, it presents on one side a Christ on the cross and on the other side a Virgin with the Child. Its cylindrical pedestal bears the engraved date of 1825, probably linked to restoration or displacement.
The cross is located south of the village of Clis, west of Guérande, in a place called the Requer. Dated from the 13th century, it illustrates Breton medieval religious art and was listed as historical monuments in 1944 for its heritage value. Its location and shape suggest a marker or protection function for travellers.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of 31 October 1944, the cross today belongs to the commune of Guérande. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) underline its importance in the local heritage, especially among the crosses of the Loire-Atlantique road. Its state of preservation and its approximate location (accuracy noted as poor in databases) are a subject of study for historians of sacred art.
