Origin and history
The Vignal Cross is a monumental stone cross from the 16th century, located in the municipality of Gerzat, Puy-de-Dôme. Originally placed in the cemetery, it was moved along the old road of Cebazat, near a statue of the 20th century Virgin. It rests on a quadrangular and pyramidal pedestal, adorned with bas-reliefs depicting a Virgin of Pitié, an anchor, a character on a cloud, and Saint Mark with his lion. The cylindrical barrel, starting from a polygonal base, carries a cross Christ and a Virgin to the Child, while the crucifixes keep traces of missing characters, probably angels.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 14 October 1908, this cross of paths is a remarkable example of Renaissance religious art in Auvergne. It is now owned by the municipality of Gerzat and is the subject of an annual pilgrimage. His carved style and motifs illustrate the importance of Christian symbols in the daily and spiritual life of local people at that time.
The Vignal cross is also notable for its material, the Volvic stone, a volcanic lava typical of the region, used for its resistance and ease of sculpture. This choice of material reflects the local resources and craftsmanship of the time. The monument, although moved, remains a historical and cultural landmark for the commune, attracting both the faithful and heritage lovers.
