Origin and history
The cross of Perols-sur-Vézère is a religious monument dated from the end of the 15th century, today backed by the closing wall of the village school. She is distinguished by her rudimentary sculpture representing a crucifixion, typical of the popular works of that time. The arms of the cross are adorned with four square brackets arranged diagonally, a simple decorative motif but characteristic of Limousin rural art of the late medieval period.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 2 January 1929, this cross illustrates the local religious heritage and its integration into the daily landscape. Originally, this type of cross often marked a crossroads, a gathering place or a sacred space on the outskirts of villages. Their presence also reflected collective piety and served as a visual landmark for regional processions or pilgrimages.
The current location of the cross, against the wall of a school, suggests a subsequent displacement or reuse of the monument, a common practice to preserve these objects in the face of urban transformations. The available data indicate a location accuracy considered "passable" (note 5/10), without further details of its original location. The property of the cross today belongs to the commune of Pérols-sur-Vézère, in the department of Corrèze.
