Forged iron cross (Case B 253): inscription by order of 11 August 1975

Origin and history

La Croix des Cabannes is a monumental Catholic wrought iron cross located in Les Cabannes, Tarn department, Occitanie region. Forged in the 16th century, it is sealed on a stone base and is distinguished by its crucifixes finished with fleurs de lily, forming a Greek cross. It is located on the church square, opposite the church of Saint-Antoine des Cabannes, also classified as a historical monument.

The Cabanne cross has been listed as historical monuments since 11 August 1975. This type of monumental cross, typical of Renaissance religious art, often served as a spiritual and social landmark for local communities. The lily flowers, symbols of purity and royalty, reinforce its emblematic character.

According to available sources, this cross is owned by the municipality of Les Cabannes. It is located at 1 Place Saint-Antoine, 81170 Les Cabannes. Its precise location, facing the church, suggests a central role in the religious and community life of the village for centuries.
