Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Saint-Gilles is a granite calvary dating from the 13th century, located in front of the south façade of the church of Saint-Gilles in the municipality of the same name. This monument, typical of Breton religious architecture, is distinguished by its carved base with a Gothic inscription: "In the year 1409, P. Delauney made this cross to Alain Pitaut". Although the cross itself dates back to the 13th century, this inscription suggests a subsequent intervention or restoration in the early 15th century.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 10 March 1907, this cross illustrates the importance of calvaries in the religious landscape of Brittany. These monuments served both as spiritual landmarks for the faithful and as funeral markers in cemeteries, reflecting the piety and local craftsmanship of the medieval era. The mention of the names P. Delauney and Alain Pitaut in the inscription offers a rare testimony of the sponsors or artisans associated with this type of work.

Located in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine, in Brittany, the cross of Saint-Gilles is now owned by the commune. Its location in front of the church, on the main square, highlights its central role in the community and religious life of the village, from the Middle Ages to today. Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its protected status and heritage interest, while noting an approximate geographic location (estimated at 5/10).
