Granite cross of 15s (Box C 39): inscription by order of 5 October 1964

Origin and history

The granite cross of Henansal is a stone monument erected in the 15th century, located in the municipality of the same name, in Brittany. This type of cross, typical of Breton religious heritage, often served as a landmark or symbol of devotion for the inhabitants and pilgrims. Its designation as historic monuments in 1964 underscores its heritage and architectural importance.

In the 15th century, Brittany was a region marked by a strong cultural and religious identity. The granite crosses, like that of Henansal, were commonly erected at crossroads, near churches or along paths. They played a role both spiritual, marking places of prayer, and practical, serving as landmarks in the landscape. These monuments also reflected the local crafts and beliefs of the time, often related to Christianity and Celtic traditions.

The Henansal Cross is now protected and classified as a historical monument since October 5, 1964. This official recognition preserves this testimony from the past, while providing visitors with an overview of the region's religious and artistic history. Its present location, near the church of the commune, strengthens its link with the local heritage and its role in collective memory.
