Origin and history

The Cross of La Planée is a monumental cross erected at the beginning of the seventeenth century, more precisely in 1604 according to the inscriptions visible on its base. Located in the heart of the village, at the intersection of departmental road 248, the road of Malpas and the street of the Church, it dominates the central crossroads. Its strategic location suggests a symbolic and practical role in the community life of the time, marking a visible and spiritual landmark for residents and travellers.

The cross, at a height of 4.90 meters, is carved in limestone and cut stone. It represents a Christ on the cross as well as a Virgin to the child, two classic motifs of Christian iconography. The base has two dates: 1604, probably that of its erection, and 1909, which could correspond to a restoration or memorial event. It has been classified as a historical monument since 31 August 1992 and bears witness to the importance of religious heritage in the region.

Prior to its final classification, the cross was first recorded in 1990, reflecting a gradual recognition of its heritage value. Owned by the municipality of La Planée, it is today a central element of the local landscape, recalling the religious and architectural history of Franche-Comté. Its style and materials are characteristic of the cross of paths of this period, often erected for devotional or commemorative reasons.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its status as a historical monument and its precise location on the edge of CD 248. The cross is a typical example of the artistic and religious achievements of the first quarter of the 17th century, a period marked by a strong activity in building and decorating spiritual buildings in the region.

Franche-Comté, to which the Doubs department belongs, was at that time a region under Spanish and then French influence, marked by religious conflicts and reconstructions. Crosses of paths, such as La Planée, often served as reference points for processions, pilgrimages or simply as protection symbols for travellers and local residents.
