Origin and history

La Croix de Revillon is a monumental stone cross located at the exit of the hamlet of Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont, in the department of Vosges (Grand Est). Dated from 1530, it marks the old national road 66 and was moved by a few meters in 1983 for practical reasons. Its inscription as a historic monument by order of April 25, 1942 bears witness to its heritage and artistic value.

The cross presents a rich iconography: Christ and the Virgin Mary adorn its two main faces, while the cask carries carved representations of two bishops, Saint Barbe, Saint Sebastian, as well as a priest and Mary Magdalene at its base. These elements reflect the local religious devotion and artistic influences of the Renaissance in Lorraine. A restoration in 1983 allowed its preservation, supplemented by the addition of a bench shortly after.

Originally established along a historic road axis, this cross illustrates the role of religious monuments in the organisation of rural territories in the 16th century. These crosses often served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks, marking village entrances or intersections. Their presence also reinforced community cohesion around Christian symbols, in a region then marked by agriculture, crafts and trade between the Vosgesian valleys and the Lorraine plains.
