Origin and history

La Croix Hosannière de La Jonchère is a cemetery cross located in the cemetery of the commune of La Jonchère in Vendée. Dating from the seventeenth century, it is distinguished by its barrel adorned with a seedling of lily flowers, a symbol often associated with the French monarchy. This type of cross, called "hosanner", was traditionally used to bless religious processions, especially during Easter holidays.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 4 March 1994, this cross is the property of the municipality of La Jonchère. Its precise location is listed in the Merimée base under the cadastral reference B 938. The cross embodies a religious and architectural heritage typical of the Vendée countryside, where funeral monuments played a central role in community life and rituals.

The Vendée, a region with a strong rural and Catholic identity, had many similar buildings, often erected in the 17th and 18th centuries. These crosses served not only as spiritual landmarks, but also as gathering points for the inhabitants. Their preservation, like that of the Cross of La Jonchère, bears witness to the local attachment to this historical and symbolic heritage.
