Hospital Cross: Registration by Order of 29 October 1926
Origin and history
La croix hosannière de Soullans is a cross of cemetery located in the commune of Soullans, in the Vendée department, in the Pays de la Loire region. This type of monument, often associated with religious processions, usually marks a place of gathering or blessing during liturgical festivals, such as Easter or Rogations.
The cross was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 29 October 1926. It is located precisely in the Soullans cemetery, at the approximate address of 3 Rue des Châtaigniers. Owned by the commune, it bears witness to the local religious and funeral heritage, typical of the rural areas of western France. Its inscription in the historical heritage underlines its cultural and architectural importance.
The Hosanian crosses, such as that of Soullans, were often erected at the entrances of villages or cemeteries. They served as the starting point or finish point for the processions, especially during the Palm Festival (where the term "hosannière", linked to the songs of "hosanna"). These monuments reflect the religious and social practices of rural communities, where life was punctuated by Christian holidays and agricultural work.
