Hospital Cross: Registration by Order of 14 April 1930
Origin and history
The hosannière cross of Veules-les-Roses is a monumental cross located in the Seine-Maritime department in the coastal commune of Veules-les-Roses. It is in the immediate vicinity of the ruins of the ancient St. Nicholas Church, suggesting a historical link with this now extinct place of worship. Its designation as historic monuments, effective April 14, 1930, attests to its heritage value and its architectural or symbolic interest in the region.
The Hosannières crosses, typical of the Norman religious landscape, were traditionally erected as gathering points for Sunday processions or liturgical feasts, especially during the Palms (where their name, linked to the Hosanna sung that day). In Veules-les-Roses, as in other rural communities, these monuments often marked a sacred space or a crossroads, playing a central role in community and spiritual life. Their presence reflected the medieval and modern social organization, where the Church rhythmized the daily lives of the inhabitants.
