Origin and history

The cross of Mont-Saint-Jean is a historical monument located at the southeast end of the promenade along the castle walls. It consists of a pyramidal base on two levels, a cylindrical barrel adorned with re-entry tables, and a circular cross with a relief titulus. Its sober style and balanced proportions make it a characteristic example of the parish crosses of the early 19th century.

Built in 1818 by Father Grognot, parish priest, this cross commemorates his pastoral action. An inscription engraved on the base ("GROGNOT / PAROCHUS / 1818") attests to his initiative. The abbot, who died nine years later in 1827, marked the local history, as reported by L-Echo parish of 1913. The cross, classified as Monument Historic in 1936, remains the property of the commune.

The monument is part of a post-revolutionary context where religious symbols found a visible place in public space. Its location, close to the castral enclosure, highlights the link between spiritual power and medieval heritage. The promenade of the ramparts, frequented by the inhabitants, makes it a historical and identity landmark for Mont-Saint-Jean.
