Croix Saint-Michel (cad. AB 251): registration by order of 22 March 1930
Origin and history
The Saint-Michel cross is a stone cross erected on the island of Bréhat in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 18th century, it is distinguished by its inscription as historical monuments by order of 22 March 1930. This monument, owned by the commune, is located precisely at the place called Saint-Michel, as indicated by the archives of the Mérimée base.
Crosses of this type, frequent in Brittany, often served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks for local communities. In the 18th century, the island of Bréhat, like other coastal areas of Brittany, lived mainly in fisheries, agriculture and maritime trade. These crosses, in addition to their religious dimension, also marked points of assembly or territorial boundaries.
The Saint-Michel cross is listed in regional inventories, notably via the Merimée platform, and has enjoyed heritage protection since 1930. Its conservation status and exact location (approximate GPS coordinates: 5205 Saint-Michel) are documented, although the accuracy of this location is considered poor (level 5 out of 10). No additional information on the sponsor or artist is available from the sources consulted.
