Origin and history
Cromlech d'Aslonnes is a megalithic monument located in the municipality of Aslonnes, in the department of Vienna, New Aquitaine. This site, dated Neolithic, is characteristic of megalithic constructions of this period, often associated with funeral or ritual functions. Its classification as Historic Monument in 1889 underscores its heritage and archaeological importance.
Cromlechs, a circle of erect stones, were usually erected by Neolithic communities to mark places of assembly, worship or burial. In Poitou, a region rich in prehistoric remains, these monuments illustrate the social and spiritual organization of the sedentary populations of the time. Their location in the landscape often reflects a symbolic relationship with the territory and natural cycles.
The location of the Aslonnes cromlech, although documented (40 Rue Principale, 86340 Aslonnes), is considered to have a priori satisfactory accuracy (note 6/10). This monument, protected under the title of Historic Monuments under the cadastral reference F 100, remains a tangible testimony of the cultural practices of Neolithic in the west-central France.
No additional information is available regarding archaeological excavations, objects discovered on site, or the precise uses of this cromlech. Current sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) are limited to its location, construction period and legal status.
