Origin and history
Kergonan's cromlec'h is a megalithic enclosure located on Île-aux-Moines, Morbihan. This site, composed of 31 stones, 24 of which were still standing in 1877, forms a horse iron 100 m long by 75 m deep. The stones, 2 to 3 m high, could be aligned along solstial lines, although current vegetation prevents them from being checked.
The first mention of the cromlech dates back to 1827, and it was classified as a historical monument in 1862. Stunned by A. Mauricet around 1877, it was also studied by René Merlet in 1922. The latter has suggested a visual link to other nearby megalithic sites, such as Graniol and Er-Lannic.
The site is partially accessible, the southern part of the Morbihan county council, while the northern part is on private property. Its orientation and structure suggest a ritual or astronomical function, typical of the megalithic monuments of the Breton Prehistory.
